Biography

The Iron Curtain (1948)

In 1943, Soviet soldier-turned-bureaucrat Igor Gouzenko is assigned his first overseas posting as a cipher clerk at the Soviet embassy in Ottawa, Canada. Tasked with maintaining strict secrecy—even under questioning from his own countrymen—Igor and his wife Anna must live among their Canadian neighbors without truly befriending them, despite the alliance between their countries during the war. While Igor follows his orders rigorously, Anna struggles more with isolation, finding the Canadian people kind and relatable. As time passes and their son Andrezj is born, Igor becomes disillusioned with his work and the Soviet regime. Deciding that he cannot return to the USSR, Igor and Anna plan to defect. Igor also attempts to expose a secret Soviet spy ring operating in Canada, one that includes figures in authority and is intent on stealing atomic bomb secrets. Smuggling evidence out of the embassy is perilous, especially as the Gouzenkos learn their posting is ending and a return to the Soviet Union is imminent. Igor must find a trustworthy Canadian official before the Soviets realize what he's doing.
