Torpedo Run (1958)

The American submarine Grayfish, commanded by Lieutenant Commander Barney Doyle (Glenn Ford), is on a mission to locate the Shinaru, a Japanese aircraft carrier involved in the Pearl Harbor attack. Doyle learns that among the Shinaru's escorts is a transport ship carrying his wife and child, captured in the Philippines. Despite warnings from his second-in-command, Lieutenant Archer Sloan (Ernest Borgnine), Doyle proceeds with the attack, tragically resulting in the sinking of the transport and the loss of his family. The Japanese attempt to lure the submarine to the surface by neglecting the survivors, but Doyle is forced to leave the prisoners behind. Determined, Doyle follows the Shinaru into Tokyo Bay in a second attempt to sink it but fails and narrowly escapes. Upon returning to Pearl Harbor, Vice Admiral Setton (Philip Ober) offers Doyle a promotion to a desk job, but Doyle insists on one last chance at the Shinaru. Sloan remains by his side, declining a command of his own. Assigned to a remote patrol off the Alaskan coast, Doyle once again encounters the Shinaru. After the Grayfish sustains damage, an attack must be launched using sonar alone. The submarine is sent to the bottom by enemy escorts, but Doyle and his crew escape using Momsen lungs and are rescued by a sister sub. Upon their rescue, they learn they have succeeded in sinking the Shinaru.
