The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

Francis, a young man, recalls the terrifying experiences he and his fiancée Jane recently endured. During the annual fair in Holstenwall, Francis and his friend Alan visit The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, an exhibit where the mysterious doctor presents a somnambulist named Cesare, awakening him briefly from his death-like sleep. When Alan asks Cesare to predict his future, Cesare ominously states that Alan will die before dawn. The next morning, Alan is found dead. Suspicious, Francis begins to spy on Cesare and Dr. Caligari. That night, Cesare attempts to stab Jane in her bed but, moved by her beauty, instead kidnaps her. Jane's father and servants are alerted by the commotion and chase Cesare, who sets Jane down gently as he escapes when he can no longer outrun his pursuers. Francis and the police investigate Dr. Caligari's caravan, unraveling the dark secrets behind the exhibit.
