Mystery of Marie Roget (1942)

Set in 1889 Paris, musical comedy star Marie Roget has been missing for ten days, and Police Inspector Gobelin is investigating her disappearance. Henri Beauvais, the French Minister for Naval Affairs and a friend of Marie's family, pressures Gobelin, who then brings in medical officer Dr. Paul Dupin to help with the case. A dead woman is found in the river with a mutilated face, and Beauvais believes it is Marie. However, Marie soon reappears but refuses to reveal her whereabouts. Meanwhile, Marie's younger sister, Camille, becomes engaged to Marcel Vigneauz. Unbeknownst to her, Marcel and Marie are lovers plotting to murder Camille for her impending inheritance. Concerned for Camille’s safety, Cecile Roget asks Dr. Dupin to escort her granddaughter to a party. At the party, Beauvais confronts Marie about her affair with Marcel. Marcel cannot go through with the murder, arguing with Marie, leading to Marie's second disappearance. Another faceless woman’s body is discovered. Dupin sneaks into the morgue, removes the brain from the second body, and identifies it as Marie. Cecile reveals Marie’s plan to kill Camille, and Marcel confesses to killing Marie to protect Camille. Beauvais demands Marcel's charges be dropped, and Dupin agrees, but Marcel then challenges Dupin to a duel. Meanwhile, Gobelin learns the first dead woman was actually Marcel's English wife. Dupin and Gobelin realize Beauvais and Marcel are missing. Dupin baits the murderer by telling Camille she has Marie’s diary, forcing him to act. They stop Marcel just as he tries to kill Camille; Gobelin shoots Marcel, and it is revealed that Beauvais was secretly assisting Dupin all along.
