King Rat (1965)

When Singapore surrendered to the Japanese in 1942, Allied POWs—mostly British with a few Americans—were incarcerated in Changi prison, a detention center with no walls or barbed wire because escape was impossible due to its remote location. Among the prisoners is American Corporal King, a resourceful wheeler-dealer who manages to carve out a comfortable life for himself in the harsh environment. While most prisoners are near starvation and dressed in tatters, King enjoys good meals and clean clothes, thanks to his bartering skills. His main adversary is Lieutenant Robin Grey, the camp Provost, who is determined to uphold order and discipline but lacks the evidence to convict King of his rule-breaking. King soon befriends Lieutenant Peter Marlowe, an upper-class British officer who is intrigued by King's charisma and disregard for the rules.
