Appointment With Venus (1951)
Set in 1940 after the fall of France, the fictitious Channel Island of Armorel is occupied by a small garrison of German troops led by the relatively gentle Hauptmann Weiss (George Coulouris). With the island's hereditary ruler away in the army, the Provost is left in charge. Meanwhile, in London, the Ministry of Agriculture discovers that Venus, a prized pedigree cow, was accidentally left behind during the island's evacuation. Recognizing her importance, they urge the War Office to act quickly. Major Morland (David Niven) is assigned the mission to rescue Venus. He enlists the help of Nicola Fallaize (Glynis Johns), the Suzerain's sister, serving as an army cook in Wales. Together with a sergeant and a naval officer, they secretly return to Armorel. Upon arrival, they learn that Hauptmann Weiss, a cattle breeder in civilian life, plans to ship Venus to Germany. In a tense race against time, the rescue team manages to outwit the Germans, smuggling the cow onto a beach and then onto a motorboat bound for Britain.
