Algiers (1938)
Pepe Le Moko (Charles Boyer) is a notorious thief who escapes France after his last great heist and finds refuge in Algeria. In Algiers, he becomes a resident and the unofficial ruler of the vast Casbah, or 'native quarter.' French officials arrive determined to capture Pepe, but the local detectives—led by the patient and cunning Inspector Slimane (Joseph Calleia)—are content to bide their time. As Pepe becomes increasingly aware of how trapped he is within his stronghold, his feelings of imprisonment intensify after he meets the beautiful Gaby (Hedy Lamarr), a glamorous visitor from France.
